17th October 2021
From the Editor's Desk
Good afternoon to my fellow Mornington Rotary Colleagues and partners. I have just heard via the media that we will see a further of easing of lockdown restrictions sooner than planned and this is great news. The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to shine very brightly lately and talking to friends , family and fellow Rotarians there is a great vide going around with a positive outlook for the very near future and for that matter hopefully for the longterm. Christmas is certainly looking to be a " full family celebration ". I hope everyone faired OK with the recent storm/downpour ? as for my residence its always a bit concerning late at night when you feel drops of water falling onto your hand and look up at your light fitting to see water coming thru !!! I called in " for a carer's visit" to both Ted and Leigh late last week and both are going along OK and news from young Dennis is all good with a few more trips for medical maintenance, and he is in great spirits with a confident outlook. With a bit of luck after todays Lockdown news we might be able to get back to our Bunnings B-B-Qs in the next three to four weeks. The Mornington Main Street Market seems to be gaining momentum and I can attest to this after sitting in traffic at a standstill for some 10 minutes, last Wednesday. The roundabout out the front of Farrells is once gain clogged up !! Great to see our community getting on with the day to day life.

Club Meetings - Last Week  - Lift The Lid

At last weeks meeting we took time to celebrate and acknowledge our ARH Lift The Lid, Mental Health Awareness. It was fantastic to see so many members join in the spirit and don that hat that now seems to be an intrinsic part of this special event. And not to forget we also had conducted a Club Assembly Meeting. Each one of our Chairs presented a brief overview of current and possibly future projects.  Our President also tabled the Clubs Forecast/ Proposed Budget and Club Social Events Calendar , which were meet with members approval. The subject of Membership was one that has been a " much discussed topic" especially at District level and with that our Membership Chair, Ross, will be conducting a meeting, next week to formulate a plan as how to best approach this matter. This particular subject is one that is very, very relevant to each and every Club Member so even though we have a great Committee working on Membership , its also very important that if you have any suggestions it would be very appreciated if you could pass onto Ross your thoughts and idea's : rosskil@bigpond.com

We had a great turnout of hats for Lift The Lid, so heres an interesting challenge, who can match the hat to the caption, a bit of fun !!
a.   Looks a bit Russell Coight
b.   From Shrek 2
c.   " I'll make him an offer he can't refuse "
d.   The CaddyShack connection
e.   The Bush Tucker Man

a.  Ali Baba and the Forty Thief's
c.  What Ice Berg !!!
c.  The Royal Fasinator
d.  Our Man in Marrakesh
e.  Lost in the Jungle
f.  which is the " Any Key "

As a result of a very positive response, from last weeks meeting, so far and more to come ?? we have raised some $635.00 for our personal contribution to Lift The Lid Day. Its definitely not too late to make a donation, so if this monetary matter may have slipped your mind, dig deep, clear the months out of the wallets and please send thru your donation :

Upcoming Club Meeting- Wed 20th Oct 21

At this weeks upcoming meeting we will be hosting as our Guest Speaker, Ted Linder, from our local Volunteer Marine Rescue, Mornington & Hastings. This should prove to be a very informative and interesting presentation to hear about our own Maritime Rescue that provide an extremely valuable to lifesaving emergency service in our local area.

Also at this weeks meeting we will welcome  Mr Paul Mee . Paul is our current 9820 District Governor Nominee and will attending our Club Meeting to introduce himself to all our Members and field any question you may wish to present. Paul is a Member of the Rosebud- Rye Rotary Club.

Rotary International Membership Survey 2020
Some six weeks ago an invitation was sent out ,via an e-mail, for all Rotarians to participate in a online survey pertaining to Membership. Well the results have now been formulated and the brief findings are as follows:

A summary of the key results of the survey available to 1.4m Rotarians in 46000 clubs around the world including Passport, Satellite and e-clubs is
-        87% of Rotarians joined through the introduction of a member
-        The reasons for staying – 42% was community service and 38% the friendship
These are indeed very interesting figures and our Clubs Membership Committee is meeting this week and will consider these facts along with a number of other factors applicable to our Club

Tommorrow Monday 18th Oct 21 will see the Birthday of one of our Members Partners in Denise Busuttil celebrating her Birthday. On behalf of the President , All our Members and Partners we wish Denise a very big Happy Birthday, well done and get David to spend up big and buy you a special present.

Art Show
As announced by our Art Show Chair, Richard, at last weeks Club assembly we have been presented (via communication from Council) with the news that our regular venue to conduct our annual Art Show is longer available to us. Since this news was passed to Richard, only last week, there has been a great deal of communication with all parties involved to find a solution to this problem. All relevant information from all both Council and a number of Community Organisation’s has been gathered over the past five days and this coming week it is anticipated that a viable outcome will be forthcoming for a suitable venue to hold our Art Show.

MUNA Online Awards Ceremony
This morning I tuned into our 9820 District MUNA online Awards Ceremony. There was a very good turn out with some 55 Invitees on screen. This years MUNA resulted in some 46-student delegates from 8 Schools who were supported by 10 Rotary Clubs from our District that includes Melbourne’s South East, the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland Regions. Our two students delegates, Maiana & Tara were assigned the country of IndonesiaThe intent of MUNA is to increase the knowledge of the United Nations and at the same time allow delegates to improve their skill and interpersonal skills. As with all MUNA events the quality of presentations is very high and unfortunately our Club’s two Student delegates did not make it to the podium, but their energy and presentation was of a very high standard and they should be proud of their involvement. A big thanks to our Youth Chair, Judy, for her efforts involvement and encouragement to get a team together, in these trying times, to participate in the 2021 MUNA event, well done Maiana, Tara & Judy.

Lift The Lid – Last Weeks Club Meeting
A very big thank you to all those who were able tune in last at last weeks meeting, albeit with a few technical hitches, and participate in our Club assembly and don that special hat for Lift The lid Day, well done.

End Polio – Planned Fundraising Event
With still being under the condstraints of our current Lockdown, and with the light at the end of the tunnel getting very bright with only about three weeks away the following communications has been sent thru as a “ heads up “ for the upcoming World Polio Day which is to be acknowledged on Sunday 24th Oct 2021
To enable more communities to participate, this year’s Polio Movie Event has been scheduled to start later than usual—from 2nd December.  The movie is THE DUKE:
  • “a ridiculously charming British comedy” and “stranger-than-fiction true story”
  • with two very popular stars—Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.
  • Rotary has a three-week pre-release window—it’s not open to the general public until Boxing Day.
  • Check out the trailer.

Apart from fun and fundraising, this year’s event also provides an opportunity to help your local cinema to recover from the pandemic.  The amount paid to the cinema would not normally be less than $10 per seat and a typical ticket price might be $20.
The Polio Movie Event is a very popular way for clubs to raise funds for End Polio Now.  It’s also a great opportunity for people in our communities to have some fun together.  With lockdowns in so many parts of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, the pent-up demand for a fun event is stronger than ever.

Regards

Brian
