From the Editor

Good afternoon to my fellow Rotarians, I hope you and your partners and families are all well and in good health. As we get a bit closer to the next announcement, towards the end of this week hopefully, in regards to the possible easing of Lockdown Restrictions, and after talking to friends and relatives I realise that I am not alone in saying " it can't come sooner ' !!!.  This weeks issue of our Club Bulletin is a brief edition in regards to content as there has not been a great deal of new items to report on.  Having said this there was a great deal of good interaction at our last Club Meeting which focused on Reports from each Chair.

Club Meeting - 16th Sep 2020.

Our last Club Meeting, last week, did not involve our regular Guest Speaker, and in lieu of this we were all offered a brief overview from each of our Clubs chairs who presented a verbal report on their projects current and proposed.

The Art Show: This item was discussed at great length and this was due to the current and future Lockdown Restrictions that are about as informative "how long is a piece of string ".  There were a lot of questions posed and as you can imagine their was a fair bit of " wait and see' as a result of what may or may not transpire over the coming weeks !! But, rest assured, behind the scenes Richard and his Committee are working diligently away with the focus to present our Art Show as we all know it. Still on track for the the Art Show to proceed at the Community Centre at Wilsons Road as has been the case in past years.  The format may have to be amended but until Richard and his Committee hear otherwise plans are being instigated for " Traditional Art Show.  Of all the Events and Projects on the planning board within our club at present the Art Show is certainly posing some challenges but well done Richard , and keep plugging away at it. đź‘Ť

Youth : As many of us are now aware our Club's nomination for the Science Forum has been successful, well done to John in his efforts thus far in another challenging environment, considering the Lockdown effects that it has had on our ability to " physically " meet with our local schools. John also informed us that due to COVID Restrictions the Science Forum may take on a local State by State format on a smaller local participation, rather that a National Level Event in the ACT.  With the remainder of our current Youth Events and Projects, especially such things as Lift the Lid Showcase Evening, the MSC Mock Interviews and the various Schools End of Year Presentations & Awards Evening's, are all on hold with a very big cloud over our ability to host and to attend.

Community: Along with the Art Show this facet of our Club is still ongoing, but again to a great degree at the mercy of the Lockdown Restrictions and to add to what some of our Club Members see as frustrating the " on hold/caretaker mode " due to the upcoming Council Elections. Once again Peter and his team are still working away at planning, management and funding issue's in relation to: The Roof Over The Long Table, The Bathroom Facilities at FUSION, The Gateway Park Project, just to mention a few of the many proposed projects in the pipeline.

We also heard from our appointed Office Holders in relation to our Membership, Social (see article below), Financial and PR & Communication. All of which provided us with an overview of their individual area's of responsibility.

Club Social Evening - Dinner & Quiz - Wednesday 30th Sep 2020

Yes you heard right ! We as a club, partners, wife's, girlfriends, family and the our pets, who have been " walked till their paws are nearly dropping off ' !!! are all getting together for a Social Night, a great meal accompanied by some fine wine and to top it all off we will participating in a brief segment of a Trivia Quiz hosted by a Mystery Presenter !!!  For the first time in what seems to be literally be months we can come together to chat, socialise, laugh and enjoy !! But it does come with some slight restrictions, it will be via ZOOM !, we will have to wait a bit longer to gather at a real face to face venue, but don't let this dampen the evening as I'm sure it will be a great night.

To add a bit of refinement to the evening our Social Team by an enthusiastic response from the Members have agreed to have " The Bayview Resturant " at the Mornington Golf Club cater for the evening, in that, orders can be placed from there extensive take away menu, which will be delivered to your doorstep.

So here's all you have to do to get your meal delivered to your home;

Birthdays/ Anniversaries

This week we acknowledge two very important events within our Club, on a personal level, and what I am referring to is that the Renowden's are in the spotlight, not only a Birthday but also a Wedding Anniversary. That's not a bad double in the same week !!!

On behalf of our President Ross, The Board, all our Members and their Partners we wish to extend a very big Happy Birthday Wish to Maree for your special day on Monday 21st Sept and to accompany this, the celebration of John & Maree's Wedding Anniversary on Saturday 19th Sept.

Well done to the Renowden's, we all wish you the best of happiness, health and love.

Zone 8 Conference last weekend
Whilst I would like to have gone to Alice Springs, the ease of attending the two ninety minute sessions, from my desk, was compelling. I attended the Saturday session and it was good enough to make me want to attend the Sunday session, which I will do via the recording, later today, at https://livestream.com/blive/rotaryzone8virtualconference2020/videos/211159847  I will update you on it next week.

The Saturday was attended by over 900 people and included Holger Knaack (RI President),  Ian Risely (Past RI President) Stuart Heal (from NZ and past RI Director), a showcase of NZ projects,  and Sarah Brown, CEO of the Purple House (an Aboriginal Managed in community health service) .

There were some very interesting thoughts presented about Rotary’s future, all of which could have provoked great discussion if face to face ..
  • The focus needs to be on effectiveness
  • Decisions need to be made by the future not past leaders
  • Clubs are critical but they don’t have to all be geographically based, they could be based on a cause or project
  • The District structure is becoming less relevant .
  • The RI Board and Council of Legislation needs review (there are 19 RI Board members and 2 year terms ?)
  • The forced move to digital technology adoption is good, it encourages quicker, action oriented meetings and results
  • The portfolio of “products” has become too broad
  • The recent elevation of Rotaract Clubs’ status, is a part of a more open pathway for diverse community engagement.

Cluster Presidents meeting on Sunday
On Sunday I attended a Cluster Presidents meeting. No “breaking” news to report. Most clubs are operating like us with Zoom meetings most weeks and about 2/3 of members attending. Several have attracted new members and whilst constrained in their activities most seem to be doing a lot of work in planning and preparing for the post COVID era.

Upcoming in October

Two important Rotary events, Lift the Lid (10th) and International Polio Day (24th). As you will have read above we will celebrate Lift the Lid on Oct 7th and we will recognise Polio Plus at our meeting on the 21st

Regards

Ross
