Stories
Guest Speaker - Mr Phillip Endersbee

Mr Phillip Endersbee – Rotary Club of Melbourne.

Last Wednesday evening our guest Speaker was Mr Phillip Edersbee from the Rotary Club of Melbourne.
Phillip’s association with Rotary goes back some two decades.
His presentation focused around the history and important upcoming 100 years celebration of Rotary in Australian.

Phillip has a very successful and prominent business and associations, with being a past Director of the Fitzroy Football Club and also a Board Member of the Australian Wemons Cricket Association, for which the latter Phillip played a pivotal role in transforming women’s cricket in Australia from a fledgling Amateur Association to what we now see and an International Women’s Cricketing Association.

With the major upcoming event of the 100yrs Celebration of Rotary in Australia in 2021, the rotary club of Melbourne have developed a large number of celebratory events and projects. Further to the 2021 anniversary Phillip along with a number of fellow Rotarians hatched a plan to nominate for the 2023 Rotary World Congress to be held in Melbourne.

Phillip informed us of the enormity of the task and the many thousand of  “man hrs. “ of research, collaboration, and planning with such organisation’s as the Melbourne City Council, Victorian Public Transport, the Vic Tourism Industry, just to name a few, to get to the point of the formulation of a submission and then presenting the proposal to The Rotary International Planning Board.

Thru their collective efforts and unbridling enthusiasm we are now fortunate to host the Rotary International Convention in 2023 in our home city of Melbourne Australia.

Phillip also provided us with his, what one might say, his first passion, that being Sailing. Phillip and sailing goes back to his teens and his love and passion for this exciting and challenging saw him crewing on the winning yacht, Wild Rose in the Sydney to Hobart this milestone achievement saw Phillip sail with his life long friend mate Mr Roger Hickman.

Coming Up

This week we have Charlie Spiers the District 9820 Foundation Chair educating and updating us on Rotary Foundation.  Before dinner we will hear a brief Bio from Hannah Swinnerton,  our RYLA candidate this year. Our meeting Chair will be Richard Vautier, Chair of our International & Foundation Committee.

The following week is Schools / Youth night chaired and hosted by John Renowden. It’s also our Lift the Lid fundraising night so be prepared to wear a hat and make a donation of more than a coin and even more if you don’t wear a hat!

After that,  on October  30 is a Board meeting.

At this  week’s meeting I will hand a round an order form for the R100 Socks, Phil presented last week. At $10 a pair you can order as many pairs as you like in red, black, navy or white (short), and sizes 3-8, 7-11, and 12-15. So bring your cash to pay on the night.

Upcoming Projects

Thanks to Ian Horton for volunteering to coordinate our role in running a drink stand for the Arthurs Seat Challenge on Sunday Nov 10. You will receive an email shortly inviting you to be one of the seven volunteers we need. Thanks too to Peter Jay for volunteering to coordinate the Christmas present collection which will be a bigger project for us this year, in partnership with Nicolas Lynch Real Estate and the Information Centre. Finally thanks to John R and Brian who will run a stand at the Peninsula Voice “Connecting Communities” Forum on Thurs Oct 31 at 5.30pm

Polio Plus

Thanks to the members agreeing at our meeting last week to round up the $310 raised at Ride Like a Girl, by $690 to $1000, that will be our Contribution to World Polio Day on October 24. Our budget still provides for another larger contribution later in the year, subject to the recommendation of our International and Foundation Committee.

Great Goldfields Getaway Weekend

Ten of us enjoyed our Goldfields weekend, starting with lunch on the shores of Lake Wendouree, and a wander through Ballaarat’s Botanical Gardens, followed by sumptuous drinks and savouries in Eileen and Ian’s room before dinner. On Sunday some enjoyed the Ballaarat Gallery, the Creswick Woollen Mills.   and others ventured to the Convent Gallery in Daylesford before a delicious lunch at the Radio Springs Hotel.
