28th June 2022 - Club Bulletin
From The Editor;
Good afternoon to all my fellow Mornington Rotary Club Member's and Partners. My apologies for the lateness of this weeks Club Bulletin, but better late than never.  With the end of our Rotary and the FY about to "hit us" at the end of this week , this will be our last official Club Bulletin for 2021- 2022, and I hope that over the past twelve months I have provided you with a valuable source of Club Information to inform, please you, provide some serious items of news and also to enlighten and brighten up your day. Not so long ago I read a very interesting thought about laughter, that being:  A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly; but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.
On a note of change early within the new Rotary Year ( in about three weeks time) I will be handing over the mantle as we will welcome in a new Bulletin Editor, a very, very big thanks goes to Judy Benholz.
Club Meeting Last Week: Board Meeting
Last week our Club hosted Ms Jackie Howgate from the Chatty Cafe. Jackie's presentation was full of life and very interesting. Jackie spoke of her amazing life experiences and her focus after some very trying times in her new found " career" in starting up the Chatty Cafe on The Mornington Peninsula.  The aim of Chatty Café Australia (a registered ACNC Charity) is to help connect communities and increase social interactions by getting people chatting – either in their favourite local neighbourhood social venues or while travelling through other Aussie communities to meet the local folk. Everyone is welcome!  The Chatty Cafe Australia initiative, despite drought, bushfires and Covid-19, is encouraging venues such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs, libraries, community centres or a range of other social service facilities across Australia, to sign up – wherever people gather and have the opportunity to socialise and chat!

Australian Rotary Health. 🍎
Last week on 15th June 2022 was Red Apple Day, and for some who may not know the significance of this event it has been "set aside" to acknowledge and support Australia's Annual Giving Day for Bowel Cancer Australia, so ARH is showcasing a project that aims to help design a more effective, non-invasive alternative to the way we screen for Bowel Cancer. For most of our Members we here at Mornington Rotary have take a vested interest in this Research Project with the past, current and ongoing financial sponsorship of our nominated PHD Candidate, Liam Ryan.  In 2021 PhD candidate Liam Ryan from the Deakin University  was awarded a " Reg Kilborn" Funding Partner PhD Scholarship to conduct research into cell based Bowel Cancer screening methods. Liam's early research has been able to isolate gastrointestinal cells from frozen stool samples using specialised laboratory methods. This date proves that methods for cell-based screening could be optimised and improved upon to design an alternative way we diagnose Bowel Cancer. His project also aims to optimise the isolation, collection and preservation of human cells in stools and to establish biomarkers for pre-cancerous polyps and malignant tutors in patients. Laim's research has the potential to vastly change peoples lives and to that end we are all very proud and excited at Mornington Rotary to be a part of this amazing Research Project, well done Liam and keep plodding away, we are all so confident that one day vets soon be able to achieve your aims into this debilitating Medical condition.
Past President, Ross Kilborn (l) with PhD Sponsor Liam Ryan.

       Club News
  • By now all members have been informed of the news of the increase in the cost of our Weekly Club Dinner Meal. Unfortunately, this was always “heading our way sooner or later” and with the current and foreseeable future rise in the cost of living, right across the board, we here at Mornington Rotary have not escaped the new financial situation we are all now experiencing in our daily life.
  • On a lighter note, under the very professional guidance and management of our new Club Treasurer, Pam Hall, we have not incurred an increase in our 2022/23 Annual Club subscription’s, this is great news !!
  • Mr Jonathon Schwartz from the Building Management team within the Peninsula Shire Council have sent thru advice to us that with the wording “ we have finally got approval for the Building permit late last week and work will be under way this week”. It would be great if the soil could be turned over this week before the end of this FY and also prior to our Club Chang Over, here’s fingers crossed.
  • All is in readiness with some very minor amendments to be made for our Clubs 2022-23 Change Over Function to be held at Belerua House & Gardens. For those who were able to RSVP and subsequently attend it should prove to be a very entertaining evening, I look forward to meeting with our Members, their Partner’s and invited Guests for a very pleasant evening.
       End of Rotary Year 2021/2022
With the end of the Rotary Year for 2021/2022 occurring this coming Wednesday evening I would like to take time out to extend a very, very big thanks to all the members who sit on our Club’s current Board, for all their enthusiastic efforts and positive encouragement and due dillingness that they have provided to myself and our Club over the past twelve months. At present I am compiling our Clubs 2021-2022 Annual Report, for promulgation next week, and this will contain some more specific items note in regards to the our Board’s fantastic work efforts.
Peninsula Trail – Update
Please find as detailed below latest dot point updates from Ross Kilborn on the current state of play:
  • The Peninsula Trail has been picked up by Victoria Walks, the peak body for walking groups in Victoria as a priority trail, including for advocacy with the State Government in the upcoming election.
  • Constructing the fully funded Somerville to Baxter section is progressing well, with tenders for construction targeted for October.
  • Planning of the Moorooduc to Mornington section is also progressing well, with a plan to have a final design within 6 months. Though the Regional Tourism Investment Fund application was unsuccessful the availability of “shovel ready plans” will assist with securing federal or state funding.
  • The upcoming State election will present opportunities to seek funding, especially for the southern Peninsula sections.
  • There is a draft parklands plan for Frankston to Mornington issued by DELWP that we will be making a submission on
