24th October 2021
From the Editor's Desk

Good afternoon to my fellow Mornington Rotary Colleagues and partners. This week you may be pleased to hear there is no Editors comments and I'm sure you have heard enough ramblings from a confused Collingwood supporter, so my scribbling’s are being replaced by a far, far more important item:
After spending some time looking thru the WWW internet and sourcing some great articles from our own Rotary International Web page, please find below some very interesting articles to mark this important day.

World Polio Day was first established by Rotary International over a decade ago and is held on October 24 in celebration of the birth of Jonas Salk, the American researcher who developed the first polio vaccine in 1955. In 1961 Albert Sabin developed the first monovalent oral polio vaccine followed by the trivalent oral polio vaccine in 1963 that has reduced polio worldwide by 99%.

The first polio vaccine was available in the United States in 1955. Thanks to widespread use of polio vaccine, the United States has been polio-free since 1979.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a public-private partnership led by national governments and health groups, in June this year, released a $5.1 billion plan to eradicate polio by 2026.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported on September 2, 2021, new polio cases were confirmed last week in these countries: Ethiopia: two cVDPV2 cases.

Rotary is encouraging clubs to hold events on or near World Polio Day this year and register the events at endpolio.org. Last year, supporters in 90 countries registered more than 1,400 World Polio Day events.

The Gates foundation was also a founding partner of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, created in 2000 to improve immunisation access in poor countries. It has donated more than $4bn to Gavi, which is currently the key player in distributing Covid vaccines in developing countries.

Last week our Club hosted an online Lift The Lid Hat Day to support ARH Mental Health Day and it was so very pleasing to see quite a few of our members make a personal contribution to this amazing institution, and from this it would be great to see all our Club Members and Partners, once gain contribute to another World Wide cause being End Polio. As this article is being compiled we have just been provided an update from our Assist DG Peter Rawlings in regards to the Rotary Peninsula Clubs joint effort in the exclusive screening (to Rotarians only) of the soon to be released movie The Duke.

Pencil into your diary Friday 03rd Dec 21 at 7;30pm

Good morning Peninsula Cluster Presidents and hope all are well.
A further update on our planned Cluster Movie Night.
Further news from David Croad, General Manager, Peninsula Cinemas;
  • We have the green light to go ahead with your screening from the film company
  • The only hurdle now is the Cinema capacity limits .
  • At present the limit is 1 per 4 sq metres which means 167 patrons across 3 cinemas which is not much .
  • Hopefully capacity limits will change once we are fully open, we just don’t know when and how many
We should find out hopefully more today in relation to revised cinema restrictions.

Club Meetings- Last Week - VMR

Last week at our Club Meeting we welcomed Mr Ted Linder from The Volunteer Marine Rescue, Mornington and Hastings . Ted provided an extremely interesting and informative graphic presentation. Ted commenced his presentation by showing a brief video which was very enlightening and provided an overview of the Service's, equipment and the dedicated personal and the ethos of what they do and why they undertake such a valuable community service to those in need on the water.  Mornington Community Bay Rescue Service, (now operating as VMR Mornington, Volunteer Marine Rescue inc), was formed in May 1980 when a boating accident within site of land could not be attended due to the lack of a local ready action unit. To view and listen to the circumstances of the formation of VMR illustrates the amazing task that the members undertake every time they ' go out " to help a water craft in need. One amazing item of note that Ted conveyed is that since the formation of the VMR " they have never missed a call out ". That fact says it all !! What an extraordinary achievement and to know that when you launch your water craft for a day out on the Bay that "VMR has your back " ! Every aspect of Ted's presentation was extremely interesting and this article can only offer a very small glimpse into what we saw and heard, from the training, seamanship skills and the professional manner in which they go about their rescue tasks. To Ted and all the amazing volunteers at Mornington and Hastings VMR we certainly acknowledge, respect and admire the dedicated effort you go to in order to perform this valuable  community service. On behalf of all our Members at Mornington Rotary we would like to extend a very big thanks to Ted and all members at VMR for all your amazing " volunteer ' undertakings, and when we open up out of lockdown, hopefully in the very near future, we would like to invite you to one of our weekly Club Meetings.

9820 DG Elect - Club Visit
Also at last weeks Club Meeting we hosted our DG Elect Paul Mee who was accompanied by his wife Adele. Paul and Adele are both members of the Rosebud- Rye Rotary Club. It was great for Paul and Adele take time out to join our Club Meeting and address us, provide us with a brief personal bio and also their involvement in Rotary. To Paul and Adele your visit was very much appreciated and we look forward to catching up face to face in the very near future.

Upcoming Club Meeting: Wed 27th Oct 21
At this weeks upcoming meeting we will be hosting as our Guest Speaker, Mr Jack Vevers, who is the current President of The Peninsula Aero Club based at Tyabb Airport. This presentation should prove very interesting into the history , current operating services, the Tyabb Air Show and the hot topic of the expansion of the Tyabb Airfield we should have another great presentation. So grab a glass of Red or a liquid refreshment of you liking, tune in, log-on and join the Meeting.

Bunnings  BBQ - Sunday 7th Nov 21

Well we know when the world gets back on an even keel and its when you can get that sausage, onion and bread at your local Bunnings Store. Look out on Sunday 07th Nov 21 , because the team from Mornington Rotary will desend onto the Bunnings Carpark to "feed the masses". With the expected full COVID " out of Lockdown and freedom" in full swing we should anticipate "a big day ". Our BBQ Team Leader, David Lancashire, will no doubt be ringing around to elicit our Club Members into one of the three shifts, we need five members per shift plus our BBQ Team Leader, lots of hands on deck ! so please put up your hand and don your face mask "we are cooking up a storm" !!

Presidents Report - 24th Oct 21
Good after afternoon to all

Art Show  Re- Location Venue
Over the past three weeks, since the notification of the requirement for the Mornington Youth Club (Gymnastics) to be relocated to the Peninsula Community Theatre  (PCT) and subsequently from this deliberation the necessity for The Rotary Club of Mornington to source a new location to present the 2022 Mornington Art Show, I have been observing and supporting our Clubs Art Show Chair Richard Vauiter along with Ross Kilborn and Victor Sullivan work through this matter.
Once the news broke a number of strategies were implemented to over come this issue, some of these measures involved quite a few transcrips of correspondence between our Club and Council, a number of visits to alternative venues with specific and detailed inspections carried out. After lots of “ footwork “ and analysing all the information the venue that provided the best and close to the PCT facilities, to present the Art Show was the new Mornington Community House.

On behalf of all our Clubs Board and all our Members I would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Richard, Ross and Victor, and also along with the support, experience and valuable advice that both Maree Renowden and Barbara Pakinson provided in dealing with this matter has been outstanding. This has been a great team effort and the resultant outcome will ensure we can present a very successful Art Show in 2022, in a venue that is crisp, clean and virtually unused. A great outcome for our Rotary Club, the Artists and all the public that I’m sure will visit over the week of the Art Show.

Committee/ Working Groups, Meetings & ZOOM
With the “coming out of COVID”, I’m sure we are all looking forward to, after what seems an eternity, re-invigorating meeting face to face for our Club’s Meetings. Hopefully the end is near for ZOOM meetings, but we still have a few to go, so hang in their folks !!!. ZOOM at times can be somewhat impersonal and the IT clichés it brings is frustrating and looking at a screen of faces and them trying to communicate is “ not everyone’s cup of tea”, but without this new social media outlet, endeavouring to get on with Rotary business, over the past 18 months throughout our constant lockdowns, would have been nye on impossible.

And as far as one of the most important and vital part of all our lives, has been the contact with family friends our children and especially our beautiful Grandchildren, whereby ZOOM has been invaluable.

Last week, once again ZOOM was needed to host a new Working Group meeting within our Club. Under the guidance of Ross K a small team was formed as part of our clubs involvement in The Peninsula Trail.  Over the coming weeks, most likely at one of our upcoming meetings, hopefully back at The Mornington Hotel, we should hear from Ross and have a presentation of their plan/s for this major project.

Next week, on Wednesday the 27th Oct 21 at 5;00pm, prior to our regular Club Meeting, our Club’s Membership Committee will meet to discuss this most important issue. As membership is the core of all Community Based Clubs we as Rotarian’s, each and everyone within our club should all take a vested interest in this area. If you have any ideas, suggestions, contacts, or potential members you may believe have the attributes, skills and outlook to become a Rotarian please ensure you contact Ross K.

Regards

Brian
