This week our Guest Speaker is Robin Stewart, District 9820 Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Action Group  who will explain Rotary’s new area of focus – Environmental Sustainability.

Last week's meeting - Club Business

With the success of the Art Show, our accumulated funds are now in excess of what we expected. John outlined the detail of this to the members . (and how fortunate were we to get the Art Show in before this new lockdown ! )

So the meeting was all about our plans for investing our funds.

We are in a fortunate position to be considering this, but it is due to all the hard work everyone put into the Art Show.

Community Projects

We approved $5k for the training of 3 people in the use of a Lucas Mill as part of our Bushfire Relief Program. The Lucas Mill machines timber, including burnt logs, into fence posts. The Mill which the Bairnsdale Clubs have, was provided by funding by other Rotary Clubs.  We are funding the TAFE Certificated Training of three community members in its use. The aim is for this to provide them with ongoing employment. We still are proposing a further $1700 for trees for re-vegetation and that will come back to the members when it is finalised.

Our Community Projects that are progressing are

  1. The Bathroom at Fusion – the $20-25K budget we guessed is looking realistic. The longer term Fusion lease is agreed. When the costings are finalised, in the next couple of weeks, we will bring this back to the members for approval. We are in the early stages of investigating a much bigger project with Fusion – some independent living units for young mothers.
  1. A temporary Emergency Accommodation service in Mornington over winter, has resurfaced with the MCISC looking at taking over the vacated Ranch Motel, until its development proposal is approved and commenced. We will report back when we know more but we have indicated $10k is possible.
  1. The Roof over the Long Table – we are budgeting $20k including a $5K grant we received from Council. But the quoted cost is double that so the two options being pursued are going back to Council for a further design simplification and seeking further funds from elsewhere, and a grant has been applied for via Greg Hunt’s office.
  1. The Healing Garden at the new Community Centre - $5k. This is still in the early stages of investigation.
The other bigger project still being investigated is the Bay Trail, which we are hoping might constitute our Rotary Centenary celebration. We have a meeting in March at which I will explain this in more detail.   It could include the Gateway Park / Eastern Green Link beautification that we have previously reported on, but that Council has not prioritised.

Please continue with your thoughts, questions, challenges and new ideas for Projects that the Club can undertake.

Our International Committee is meeting this week to consider their Project options and we will report back after their deliberations.

Our Youth Committee reported to the Board meeting  that

1.Ben Hanson NYSF…sent us a note reporting that the program concluded towards the end of January. “It was a great experience even though it was all online. I was able to listen to Nobel Laureates and listen to people from Antarctica. It was all very exciting.  Thank you very much for the opportunity to complete this program”.

2. We have received letters from the Principals of
  1. Little Yarra Steiner School ( Kai Harrison from Mornington Park PS),
  2. Dromana SC (Lucas Harding, Moorooduc PS) and
  3. Mt Eliza SC ( Jesse Hopkins Morn PS)
indicating money for student scholarships has been received and applied to their study costs.

Shine on Awards Thanks to the work of John P we have nominated two excellent candidates for the District  Shine on Awards, Krista Bailey from Mornington Yacht Club and Karen Fankhauser, a disability advocate you may have recently seen in the media. Details of the Awards for  exceptional service to others by people with disabilities are at https://www.rotarydistrict9800.org.au/stories/shine-on-awards-2020

Next, week, the 24th,  is the Art Show celebration and report and we are planning to be able to meet at the Hotel. Please encourage your partners and everyone connected to the Art Show to come. Please let Eileen know who you are bringing. It’s at the Mornington Hotel as usual and it’s a 2 course meal for the same $20ph.

and last not not least Happy Birthday to Dennis Corke for Friday

Regards
Ross
