Last week our club was privileged to have Mr Andrew Plympton as our guest speaker. Andrew’s achievement’s in the world of sport and business read like a who’s who in which he has reached the highest levels of participation, management and coaching within the sporting world Andrew’s life has encompassed some eight years within the AFL (St Kilda Football Club) at the premier level, as the Clubs Chairman and President thru the mid 80’s. Through strict financial management Andrew oversaw a return to financial stability for the Club, along with growth in membership and on-field success, including in 1997, the Saints first Grand Final appearance in 26 years. Andrew was awarded Life Membership of the Saints in 2000.
During his presentation is was abundantly clear that his one true passion is that of sailing. Andrew’s sailing career has spanned some 45 years, starting at the ripe young age of 8.
His love of sailing, overwhelming enthusiasm and unique people skills has resulted in a career of outstanding achievements. To mention just a few these include, in 1988 he won the World Championship in the International Etchells Class, in 1993 was elected the Chairman and President of the Kilda Football Club, in 2004 was appointed as President of Yachting Australia, and in 2008 was horned as a Member of the Australian Olympic Committee and the Australian Olympic Foundation.
Andrew remains committed to Olympic Sailing and, while no longer President of Yachting Australia, holds the position of Chairman Advisory of the Australian Olympic Sailing Team (this includes Paralympic).
Andrew’s presentation touched on many facets of his stellar career and he made special mention of the complex mechanisms in todays modern sporting sphere when it comes to preparing athletes to compete at the highest International levels. He spoke on the enormous pressures particular the physiological pressures that elite athletes are subjected to. His talk provided a very real time insight into the many aspects pertaining to the years of preparation that go into producing an athlete to be able to "step up " and represent their country on the highest stage of competitive sport.
Andrew’s presentation was totally captivating and extremely informative. The Rotary Club of Mornington would like to extend very big thanks for his appearance at our Club’s Meeting.

Arthurs Seat Challenge
Sunday morning, just gone, saw another Mornington Rotary Club participation in a long time and major sporting event on the Peninsula, that being the Annual Arthur’s Seat Challenge. A very early start saw a number of our Member’s volunteer to “ man a water station “ along the gruelling course from the Rosebud foreshore to the summit of Arthurs Seat. A big thank you to those members who braved the cold and blustery conditions to assist
Thanks to: Pam , Brian, Ian , Neil , Eileen, Peter and Meredith for braving the cold and suppling some much needed H2O to the thirsty runners.
