Stories
Rotary Club - Meeting November 20th
Guest Speaker – Mr Shane Murphy – Mornington Peninsula Marine Alliance

Last week our Guest Speaker was Mr Shane Murphy from the Mornington Peninsula Marine Alliance (MPMA). Shane hails from a long background of local council involvement serving with the East Gippsland and Macedon Ranges Shire Councils. As a result of these many years of service involving the complex issues associated with regional development and planning Shane is ideally positioned to be involved with the Marine Alliance and is currently serving as their Executive Director.

Shane’s presentation provided us with an insight into the functions and the mission of the Marine Alliance, and he also highlighted the many community and commercial organisation’s that benefit from the Alliance and more importantly the vast potential that the Mornington Peninsula, specifically that of the maritime environment contributes to our lifestyle and financial well-being.

The Mornington Peninsula Marine Alliance was formed back in the mid 2000’s as an advocate for all sectors of the commercial, pleasure and community bodies that have a vested interest in the coastal activities on the Mornington Peninsula. The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council (MPSC) supports the Alliance, which provides a collaborative interest in our Shire’s greatest asset that being our coastal surroundings.

Shane highlighted via a detailed and extensive visual display a number of major projects that the Alliance are currently working on, one of which is the possible re-development and very large expansion encompassing the current Yaringa Boat Harbour.

Shane also enlightened us as to a large number of businesses that have benefited from support and involvement with the Alliance. One such example is the business known SEALITE, (Marine Navigational Lights & Beacons) that commenced its operations out of one mans’ “ backyard / garage shed “, in Hastings and has now developed into a multi million dollar business at National and International operating levels.

As Shane highlighted the Marine Sector on the Peninsula contributes an enormous monetary benefit of more that $100m per anum to the value of goods and services produced on the peninsula for local, national and International markets.

It was quite evident that our beautiful peninsula is not only a great place for people to enjoy a swim, a family vacation or a day out on the water for a fishing trip, but a vast environment of business, commercial and council infrastructure and development for all.

President's Report's
Coming Up this Week

One of the major objectives in our plan for this year was to find a significant community project. There have now been lots of meetings with Council, both Councillors and staff, the Police, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Mornington Information and Support Centre (MISC), and some possible projects are emerging.
  1. A lid on (roof over) the Long Table. We have received a council grant of $5000 towards this. The exact cost of construction, and the extent to which it can be done using our volunteer labour is still being explored. It’s a logical extension of the existing Rotary Project and we are now working on the cost estimate.

  1. The beautification of Gateway Park (cnr Barclay and Gordon Sts) and ultimately a “Greenlink” Path through to the Esplanade. We have concept drawings from Council and again the details are being explored as to what our role could be and the cost. Potentially it could engage the community and schools in planting etc.

3.      The purchase of bedding to support the homeless over winter. This project is being developed by the MISC, and involves churches making their halls available overnight, based on a successful model elsewhere in Melbourne. We are talking to District 9820 about a potential District Grant towards this. Again details are being worked out.

It is feasible that all three could be tackled, and the Gateway Park Project could go for several years and be a good fit with 100 Years of Rotary in Australia.

In parallel with all this our International & Foundation Committee is exploring potential projects, including End Trachoma, through the Rotary Club of Melbourne.

I am also keen to ensure our support of both Foundations / Polio Plus and Australian Rotary Health is solid.

Hopefully in February we will have sufficient details to be able to present more information about all of the above to members for decisions, unless of course someone has better ideas? So the purpose of this update, besides informing you, is to ask you to talk to Peter Jay as Chair of our Community Committee, and Richard for International and Foundation, or any other Board member, about your initial thoughts on the above.

Regards

Ross
