From the Editor

Good morning to my fellow Mornington Rotarians, partners and families. A pinch and a Punch for the first day of the Month and with that we are now officially in Summer. What another great week in our beautiful City of Melbourne and our own very special part of the Mornington Peninsula. It was great to see everyone out and about this last week filling up our cafe's , Hotels and eateries. One very interesting change that most of us have noticed and experienced is that Main St is now a foot traffic thouroghfare only, and talking to quite a few locals and having experienced it myself I noticed one " strange " occurrence, that being; as human's we all get into somewhat of a mind set and even though we can now stroll down the bitumen were cars once travelled we still tend to walk on the footpath, and for me when I crossed over the " road " I still looked right then left for "oncoming traffic ", we certainly are creatures of habit.

Last Weeks Club Meeting- Our Christmas Social Evening

What a fantastic evening we all experienced when we finally came together at our Clubs Annual Christmas Social Evening. The setting was superb and as usual the views from the decking at the Mornington Golf Club were great with clear skies and a wonderful sunset to see in the night. A great time was had by all with a minimal number of items of essential club business and then down to a fine meal, wine and lots of fellowship and social interaction. So here is a selection of the many pics taken on the night.

New Member's Induction

As with all Rotary Clubs there are always a number of important functions, projects, dinner's, guest speakers,  social evenings, meetings, AGM's and the like, but probably the most important event that any Rotary Club will host is the Induction of New Members, and at our Annual Christmas Function, last week, The Rotary Club of Mornington welcomed two new members into our ranks. There was a very broad smile accompanied by a real sense of fellowship when on behalf of all members our President Ross Kilborn conducted the brief ceremony to officially induct (husband and wife team) Mr Peter Orton and his wife Mrs Roberta Orton as our newest members. As a club it is very special for each and every member to welcome and have new members from the greater community join Rotary. Well done to Peter and Roberta and we all look forward to sharing with you many years of fulfilment in the service of Rotary.

Next Club Meeting - Wed 02 Dec 2020 - Mornington Hotel

After what seems like an eternity we finally meet at our regular location of The Mornington Hotel, tomorrow evening, Wednesday 02nd Dec 2020 at 6;00pm for 6;30pm, in the Upstairs Room.  A special note for tomorrow evening and also our meeting next week that effects the number of attendee's, that being: with the " inside dinning" guidelines as promulgated by the VIC State Government. As a club when we " book in " the final numbers are " locked in by a date / time deadline " that means that should you decide to turn up without a pre-booking you cannot attend, sorry about this but this is one of the caveats of coming out of COVID with Inside Public Gatherings.

With payment tomorrow evening if we could all please pay by cash at the sign-in desk , upon entry into the Upstairs Function Room, this would be great.

Our Guest Speaker, tomorrow evening is Ms Shannon Smit, who is the current President of The Committee for the Mornington Shire.  Looking forward to resuming our Club Meetings and subsequent business matters in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, see you there.

Next Club Meeting - Agenda Item of Business

As a " heads up " at tomorrow night's Club Meeting there are two items being tabled for Members consideration / discussion and possible approval that being: Our Club has been approached by two local Schools for a request for funding for Educational resources that are being instigated into next years School Curriculum. One is for the purchase of a Reading Scheme / Program and subsequent material to assist students at lower grade's who are struggling with literacy skills and the second from another local school being a program which is like a remedial resource akin to ‘animal therapy” where equine assistance is used for a few struggling or vulnerable students, a bit like riding for disabled but this is focussed more on mental health and psychological issues using horses as the catalyst to improvement.

Our Youth Chair in consolation with the Youth Committee have investigated both requests are of the opinion that they are an important learning packages and are part of a worthwhile advancement in the delivery of educational tools for the students in our area.

Birthday's and Anniversaries

On behalf of our President Ross, all the Members and their Partners the Rotary Club of Mornington would like to extend a very, very big congratulations to another milestone that being the Wedding Anniversary of Ken & Wendy Bilham. Well done to a beautiful couple on so many years of love and partnership we hope you celebrate this special occasion with many more to come.

President’s Report – 01st December 2020

It was so good to see so many at our social night – Christmas Dinner - last week.   Thanks again Eileen for organising it.  It was a great opportunity to formally welcome and induct Roberta and Peter Orton, and recognise Brian as our President Elect. It was good to also welcome Jo Davie, and Arie de Wit, and have so many partners present. There’s a few photos on our facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofmorningtonvictoria/
I encourage partners and friends to come along to hear our excellent guest speakers in the next two weeks.

Next Wednesday December 2 we are back to normal at the Mornington Hotel, 6 for 6.30pm, but upstairs.  Being the first Wednesday of the month our feature guest speaker is Sharon Smit, President of the Committee for the Mornington Peninsula. You have no doubt seen the media coverage Sharon and this Committee have generated recently, particularly about whether we should be part of Melbourne or treated as a regional area.

Wednesday December 9 The following week we have another great night with Senior Sargent Paul Edwards, who is in charge of Mornington Police Station, accompanied by Senior Constable Greg Kraus, a Paul Harris Fellow (Mt.Eliza). They will talk of policing issues in Mornington and the changes COVID imposed.

With COVID Restrictions we need to book and confirm numbers so please let Eileen know if you are attending and any guests you are bringing.

Christmas presents for families – this week and next  Please bring any present you would like to contribute to either this,  or next week’s meeting, or drop it off to either  the MCISC at 320 Main St. Toyworld are also offering the 10% discount again for purchases that go to this community collection.

We are back at Bunnings BBQ’s on Saturday Dec 5We have been very well trained in Bunnings COVID Safe Plan. We need six people in the morning and six in the afternoon – so please volunteer directly to David.

A Christmas Train Trip. We are still working on the idea of a Steam Train trip for kids before Christmas.

Australia Day 2021 We have been successful, along with the other Cluster Clubs, in our application to the National Australia Day Council for a grant of $1000 to help our community  celebrate Australia Day. We applied to run a morning tea / coffee adjacent to the Art Show. Any creative ideas and volunteers to organise it are welcome.
