From the Editor

Good afternoon to all my fellow Mornington Rotarians and their Partners and families, I hope you are well and going along OK. Well its good to be back at the desk , although there is a part of me that still wishes I was away in my Holiday Cabin with the family down by the beach at Lake Tyers, but all good things must end and I'm looking forward to another busy Rotary Year. Speaking of being busy, over the period of my absence there has been a great deal of Mornington Rotary business going on and a big thanks goes out to Ross for filling in the gap and keeping everyone up to-date with our regular weekly Club Bulletin, well done young Ross. Watching and ' tuning in' via e-mail, from afar, we have had The Long Table Dinner, The Art Show and number of Guest Speakers a break from what we thought may be finally the end ' staying at home ' in having to revert back to a ZOOM meeting !!!.

A word of thanks to one of our long time Club Members, Leigh Power,  who at last weeks meeting provided us with a brief insight into a few points of the humorous and informative traits of one our recently passed member Mr Arthur Morton. It is always a sad time to lose a past member and thanks to Leigh for highlighting some aspects about Arthur that we can reflect and remember with a smile and fond thoughts. Well done Leigh.

Guest Speaker - Mr Robin Stewart - President Elect - Frankston Rotary Club

At our last Club Meeting (via Zoom) on Wednesday past we welcomed as our Guest Speaker Mr Robin Stewart from the Rotary Club of Frankston. Robin is the current President Elect and also holds the office as our Rotary District 9820 Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Action Group, and it was in this capacity that Robin addressed our Club. As nearly all of us are now aware Rotary International have now 'added ' a new and seventh area of focus to our Services in " Protecting our Environment ". This new area of focus was first mooted way back in 1991 and has taken many many years of work by a great number of Rotarians and High Profiled Partners to finally come to fruition. More than $18M in Foundation Global Grants funding has so far been allocated to environmental related projects over the past five years. This has created of a distinct area of focus to support the environment and should give all Rotarians even more ways to bring about positive change in the world and increase the impact we as an organisation contribute to our planet.

Robin spoke of the many ways in which we can individually and collectively contribute to improving the natural environment, for instance one great point was " when you go out for your daily walk have a look around and see if you can pick up three items of waste plastic and put in the bin , along the way ". What a great idea, something so simple and non taxing on all us and in one small way can make a change. Another interesting aspect that Robin presented was the enormous focus, over the past ten years or so, that our children and in particular our grandchildren are being educated via formal schooling and all associated learning establishments about the need to " protect our environment". This ethos can have flow on effect in the way that the greater community look at Rotary and the manner in which we embrace and actively involve ourselves in one of our planets greatest problems. The future affiliation between Rotary and our youth can only be beneficial for all. Robin's " pet interest " in the environment is focused on Bees and with past presenters and our own President a BeeKeeper this is one small way we can make a valuable contribution as I' sure we know the great importance that our bees have on a natural floral environment. One area within all Rotary Clubs via a strong recommendation from Rotary International is to formally appoint and Environmental Officer (at Club level) to formulate, action projects and advertise to wider community what we do as an organisation to contribute to the environment, and to this end we can be proud of our Clubs efforts in the construction of a forest area within the Briar's and also the contribution of tree plant stock to the recent East Gippsland Bushfire Revegitation Project. To leave you with a thought , I will quote from our Foundation Trustee Chair , Gary C.K Huang " with the global population now reaching 8 billion, protecting the environment is increasingly important. It is time for us to use our collective resources to invest in a smart and efficient way to protecting our environment , we are qualified to take this initiative because we are a global group of problem solvers with diversified talents".   The Rotary Club of Mornington would like to thank Robin for his very important and informative presentation.
