30th Nov 2021
From the Editor's Desk

Last week saw our President take a very brief few days away and it was great to see our Club Secretary, Ian Horton, step in and take over the reins for general matters of Club Business and also Chair last weeks Club Meeting, and from all reports he did a great job, well done Ian. Well only one sleep to go and another Summer is upon us, and what a great time we should be in for, as opposed to last years summer which was still under the very tight and unknown COVID restrictions. The weather is certainly on the improve and its looks like a very good " bumper year " for the Tourist and Hospitality sectors within our own Mornington Peninsula, good luck with trying to get a table, at short notice, in the Main St and its great to see it is alive and kicking.

Club Meetings- Last Week - Guest Speaker

With the return of our Guest Speakers to our weekly Club Meetings it was very pleasing to see and hear from John Hall last week.

John Hall gave us a most enlightening & entertaining presentation of his more than 40 years of practicing as a barrister in Victoria. His journey has taken him from the courts in Melbourne to the country regions including establishing a practice in Sale. Covering the broad spectrum of law from criminal law to Family Law & Estate matters, conciliation & mediation roles, John also has significant experience in the building & construction industry. John stressed he has always viewed the law as an adjunct to his priorities in life – namely his family and personal goals & interests, including fly-fishing, clay target shooting & his great passion for sailing!

A keen observer of “life” John writes poetry, largely stemming from his court interactions, and he read out several of his poems which were both moving and amusing. He made the observation, that as a barrister he has experienced the ‘best & worst’ of humanity in representing clients in court. Thank you John for a most warm and informative presentation.

Upcoming Community Events

Bunnings BBQ - This coming Friday, 03rd Dec 21, our Club will, once gain, be throwing a snag on the BBQ, with what should prove to be another great day at our local Bunnings Car Park, where we will endeavour to feed the locals and visitors with a feast of Sausages accompanied with a side dish of Onions, yum, yum. Our BBQ Team Leader, David Lancashire, has compiled his roster for the three shifts and will confirm the volunteers at tomorrow evenings Club Meeting.

SANTA Train Ride - Well its coming up to that time of the year when that rather rotund white haired gents pays us a visit, and at Mornington Rotary we are "getting into the spirt of things" with what looks like an annual project, in the SANTA Train Ride. This coming Saturday, 04th Dec 21, our Club will in conjunction with Mt Eliza Rotary, as a mini Cluster event, and also with the fantastic support of the Mornington Community Centre, with Stuart-Davis Meehan at the helm, will see a number of local children have a very special opportunity to ride in our own local Steam Train as a Christmas treat. The train will arrive at The Mornington Station at about midday, where members from our Club will collect tickets a COVID Safe Check and then all aboard and off to the Moorooduc Station where the happy riders will be meet by that Jolly Man with a small present and a free sausage sizzle, courtesy of Mt Eliza Rotary Club.  If you are free and are available this coming Saturday Afternoon welcome are still looking for a happy jovial SANTA to hand out the presents and bring a bit of happiness to the children, so maybe we might have someone in our Club, or if you have a contact who is willing to help , this would be great

Club Meeting - Guest Speaker - Wed 01st Dec 21

At Club Meeting this coming Wednesday evening we have invited Ms Jade Phelan, who is the current CEO of The Bays Hospital. It has been some time since we had a visit from the previous CEO, and a lot has transpired in both services and also the ongoing development of new Cancer Centre. We are all looking forward to hearing from Jade and our Club and The Bays Hospital have had and continue to a very good partnership to serving our local Mornington Community. Jade will be our last Guest Speaker for this calendar year so we welcome as many members and partners along for tomorrow evening's Club Meeting.

Certificate of Appreciation - Water Sky Hydrant

Last week our Club received a letter and certificate of Appreciation in regards to our contribution of a Water Sky Hydrant Unit, the e-mail we received addressed to our International Chair Richard Vautier is shown as below

Hello Richard

I thought I would just provide and update for your Rotary Club on their sponsorship of a SkyHydrant at Khaling LSS in Bhutan.  The installation happened earlier this month. I attach a copy of photos we have just received.
Once again, we thank the club for their generous donation.  The Rotary Club of Thimphu will provide a video of the SkyHydrant Installation program once it is able to move around freely and we will make this available to our sponsors.
Kind regards

Presidents Report - 30th Nov 21

Good morning to all,

Not a lot to report from the Presidents desk this week, the one thing I can “report on“ is there is a massive amount of water within the upper reaches of The Murray River in the Corryong region. With my recent brief leave of absence over the past week, whilst visiting family, it didn’t stop raining for four days straight and The Murray is in flood with water coming over the dam Wall at the Hume Weir a very impressive sight. Even with most of their pastures’ under water, there are a great many landholders/ farmers with a big smile on their faces knowing the have plenty of water to get thru this summer.

Water Sky Hydrant

With matters of Club Business, late last week we received another Certificate of Appreciation from Disaster Aid Australia on behalf of the Khaling Lower Secondary school in Bhutan for our contribution for the supply of a Water Sky Hydrant.

Child Protection
Late last week I received communication from District in regards to a number of matters pertaining to all Rotary Clubs responsibilities within the scope of Sexual Abuse, Molestation and Harassment. Their have been and will be further changes to policy documents. Victorian District Protection Officers were unaware of the new Victorian Government Child Safe Standards that will come into effect from 1/7/2022.  Information will follow from our 9820 District Protection Officer as they come to hand.

Regards

Brian
